Mr. Sprinkle,
I am CDR Robert Moss, Director of Histories and Archives for the
Naval History and Heritage Command. Among other responsibilities, my office
provides name options to the Secretary of the Navy for ships scheduled. We
provide those names based on a "naming convention" approved by the Secretary
at the naming of the first ship in a given class, or amended by him at a
later date.
The name given a ship is chosen solely by the Secretary of the Navy.
On that basis I cannot say when, or even if, a specific name will be given
to a US Navy ship. Rest assured that your suggestion, Saint Petersburg,
along with the hundreds of others we receive each year, will be given due consideration when evaluating names for future ships.
Thank you for you interest in Naval History and the future of the
Navy. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact me.
Very Respectfully,
CDR Robert "Groundhog" Moss
Director of Histories and Archives
Naval History and Heritage Command
